“Hazel, someone is at the door for you.” My sister Hayley stuck her head inside the room we shared.
“You don’t know who it is?” I asked as I sat up from my comfortable lying position.
“Yup but go see for yourself,” she stated and walked away.
I let out a disgruntled breath and made my way to the front door. When I saw the person standing by the door, my heart skipped a beat. I haven’t seen him since before I left for school. Why is he here? Looking so damn good, I might add!
“Ricky, umm, wha--what are you doing here?” I stammered.
“I wanted to see you.” He walked towards me and pulled me into a hug.
I ain’t gon’ lie. It felt so damn good to be in his arms. So good that I didn’t push him away like I should have, not right away.
“Umm, how have you been?” I asked when I finally willed myself away from him and took a few steps back.
“Good. I miss you though. You been good?” He closed the space again, then grabbed and held my hands.
“I’ve been fine. How’s school? And basketball?” I nervously pulled my hands from his and took another step back.
“It’s all good. Today is the only day that I could come home. I gotta head back soon. I took a chance stopping by here. I needed to see you. Hazel I miss you so much. I’m so sorry about everything. I know I fucked up a lot and you didn’t deserve that baby. I’ve been wanting to talk to you to tell you how sorry I am but you kept blocking me. I just---I need you to know how sorry I am. Do you think we can try again?” Ricky poured out his heart.
He closed the space between us again. His closeness made me lightheaded and I couldn’t think. I’m trying to find the words to respond to him but nothing is coming to mind.
“Do you forgive me baby?” he asked with pleading eyes.
“Ricky I---” I began.
Before I could answer, the doorbell rang. I looked behind Ricky and I saw none other than Bishop standing on the other side of the screen door because the front door was open. What the hell? I quickly walked around Ricky to open the screen door.
“Bishop!” I exclaimed.
“Haze!” Bishop returned. He stepped inside and wrapped me in his arms so tight, burying his face into my neck and planting kisses there. I felt good in Ricky’s arms, I’ll admit. But this, being in Bishop’s arms, this is what I’ve been missing and longing for.
“I’ve missed you baby,” Bishop said. He cupped my face with his hands, kissed my lips and took a step back to look at me.
“What are doing here?” I asked, forgetting that Ricky was there.
“Tay’s dad bought him a car, so we decided to leave today. Karizma is outside in the car too,” he replied.
“Ah hem,” Ricky cleared his throat, gaining our attention. Bishop looked in his direction and I turned around.
“Oh, uhh, Bishop, this is umm, Ricky. Ricky, this is my boyfriend, Bishop,” I nervously introduced them.
“Ricky?” Bishop spoke as he looked back and for the between Ricky and I. “What the fuck are you doing here?” He took a few steps towards Ricky.
“It’s really none of your business why I’m here. But um, Hazel, we can finish this another time,” Ricky dismissed Bishop, stepped around him and walked towards the door.
“Naw ya’ll ain’t finishing shit at no time, so I hope you said all you need to say,” Bishop said to Ricky’s back as he reached for the door handle.
“Nigga, I was two seconds from having my girl back before you walked in. Don’t get it twisted. A girl never forgets her first everything.” Ricky winked at me and walked out of the door. No this nigga didn’t!
Bishop frowned at me and went to the door and yelled after Ricky, “She does when her last is the best she’s ever had. Don’t you get it twisted nigga. The fuck outta here!”
He let the screen door close and turned back to me with a scowl on his face. He leaned up against the doorframe, then folded his arms across his chest.
“You ain’t got shit so say Haze?” he asked after about thirty seconds of staring me down.
“Uhh not really. I didn’t know he was coming over here just like I didn’t know you were coming.”
“But I’m your man Hazel. What the fuck did he want?”
“He was only here for five minutes before you came. All he did was apologize. If he wanted anything else, he didn’t tell me,” I lied.
Bishop looked at me with his mouth twisted up like he didn’t believe me.
“Why are you looking at me like that? We were still standing by the door and he had his coat on. He had just got here Bishop.” I told him again. When he didn’t budge, I took the few steps it took to be standing in front of him and pecked his lips.
“His ass ain’t come over here just to apologize. Don’t even communicate with him no more.” Bishop is jealous and it’s so adorable. He put his hands around my waist. “Fucking up my surprise and shit.” He gave me a lingering kiss.
